Eric Johnson, SMASH supporter, longtime road manager for Neil Young and other artists, and newly the West Coast desk for the Road Recovery project, shares his top three tips for staying healthy on the road:

  1. GET A MINI-FRIDGE OR COOLER AND BUY HEALTHY GROCERIES.

This may take a bit of advance planning or effort, but considering how much time I spend in hotel rooms, it has been a literal life saver.

If you can convince your tour manager to do you a solid and request a mini-fridge in your hotel room, you’ll be on your way, but you can also do this with a small cooler and ice. Hit a grocery store, or bodega and get things that you can eat how you want, when you want. I buy instant oatmeal, fruits, nuts, yogurt…things you won’t see in a mini bar, and you’d pay exorbitant amounts for through room-service. Something as simple as a mini fridge can give you control of your diet.

  1. TURN OFF THE TV.

Another tip to those who spend a great deal of time in hotel rooms…this is completely free and will almost instantly relieve stress and anxiety.

  1. TAKE THE STAIRS.

Another great health was from a musician twenty years my senior that has proven to be very beneficial and doesn’t cost a dime: When given the option, especially if it’s only a few flights, take the stairs instead of the elevator. It may only hurt for a second, but the benefits add up.

Your gift can shape the future of our city's music scene.

Behind the scenes of your favorite albums, far too many musicians are struggling to afford the healthcare they need to stay healthy and make music. When basic needs like routine physicals, mental health support, dental care, and glasses are often inaccessible, it is extremely difficult to sustain a music career. And without help, the music that has defined our city for decades could fade.
